Cooking for a Crowd

Creative Catering Ideas For Children's Parties

If you're planning any type of party for your children, figuring out what to serve the youngsters is probably at the top of your to-do list. The good news is that you'll have plenty of creative options that go beyond just macaroni and cheese and hotdogs.

No matter what type of kids' celebration you're putting together, such as a birthday party, holiday get-together, or a quinceanera, the menu will be one of the stars of the show. Design a food spread that not only nourishes the young party-goers as they mix, mingle, and play games but also caters to picky eaters.

One way to entice the children to the lunch or dinner table is by allowing them to create their own meals. You can provide the basics and then instruct the guests to put together their own plates any way they'd like.

Depending on your party-planning budget and the size of the crowd, you can either make the food yourself or hire a local catering company to do the work for you. If you go with the professional caterer, try to choose one that specializes in preparing meals for younger clientele. Also, take any of the guests' food allergies and dietary restrictions into consideration when designing the perfect menu.

Following are some fun and creative kids' party catering ideas to get you started:

1. Taco Bar

A taco bar will allow the children to get hands-on with their meal and completely customize their lunch or dinner. On a buffet-style table, set out individual bowls of seasoned ground beef, refried beans, shredded cheese and lettuce, diced tomatoes, black olives, and toppings such as salsa, guacamole, and sour cream. Don't forget plenty of hard and soft taco shells as well.

Instruct the guests to work their way down the table, building their tacos as they go. Provide taco holders in interesting colors and designs, such as dinosaurs, to make it easier for the kids to build their tacos and eat them.

2. Fruit and Vegetable Trays

An easy way to entice kids to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables is by serving them in creative ways and with tasty dips. Show the youngsters that produce can be healthy and fun by creating rainbow-hued fruit skewers filled with various types of melon, berries, and bananas. Provide bowls of sweet cream cheese or marshmallow dips as well.

When it comes to vegetables, arrange them on the tray in a rainbow pattern and include bowls of creamy ranch dressing for dipping.
